Colonels open season with sweep against Mississippi Valley State
The Nicholls State University baseball team opened its season at home this weekend with four-straight wins over Mississippi Valley State University.
The Colonels (4-0) secured an early lead Friday when infielders Kyle Reese and Joey Morales scored after Alex Shermer’s single resulted in a fielding error. In the fourth, infielder Juan Givan hit a sacrifice fly allowing Shermer to get to home and Reese scoring in the sixth after Shermer’s single hit. The Devils scored in the seventh inning, but Morales and Reese scored consecutive triples in the final two runs, bringing a 6-1 victory for Nicholls.
On Saturday’s doubleheader, the Colonels opened the first game with a 9-0 lead scoring five runs in the first inning, one in the second and three in the third. After a scoreless fourth inning, Nicholls added two runs in the fifth. The Devils interrupted Nicholls’ shutout with a run in the sixth. The Colonels followed by combining four runs in the bottom of the inning and adding one more run in the seventh and another in the eight. The Devils scored a run in the ninth with two single hits, but Nicholls closed out the game 18-2.
Nicholls started the second game with five runs, added a run in the third and one more in the fourth. The Devils scored a run in the fifth inning, but the Colonels answered with a six-run sixth inning. Nicholls scored two more runs in the eighth inning and closed game two in the ninth 15-1 on Saturday.
The Colonels left Didier Field with a 13-3 victory against the Devils on Sunday. MVSU opened the game with a run in the first, but the Colonels were able to match the inning after Reese hit a double that allowed infielder Ethan Valdez to get to home plate. Nicholls opened an 8-1 advantage after adding a run in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth. Both the Devils and the Colonels scored two runs each in the fifth. The Colonels ended the game after scoring three runs in the eighth, recording a W4 streak.
Nicholls will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to play against the University of Alabama at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
