Colonels earn second conference win for first time since 2010
After overcoming a 14-point deficit on the road against Lamar University for their second conference win, the Colonels will host the University of Central Arkansas at Guidry Stadium on Saturday.
The nation’s leading rusher Kade Harrington rushed for 255 yards against the Colonel defense. Rebowe said despite giving up over 300 yards rushing, they were composed when they needed to be.
“On defense, we gave up several big runs against one of the best backs we have ever played against, but we got some stops at crucial times,” Rebowe said. “We only gave up one touchdown in the second half and forced some turnovers that changed the momentum of the game.”
Colonel starting quarterback Tuskani Figaro broke his clavicle on a 75-yard run during the first drive of the game. Sixth year senior Landry Klann entered the game and helped the Colonels to a 30-28 win. Klann said they relied on the rush to manage the clock and overcome the deficit.
“We leaned on our running game, and it came down to the very end,” Klann said. “We took what they gave us and pulled out a victory.”
Rebowe told field-goal kicker Francisco Condado that he would score the game-winning field goal after he missed the extra point in the third quarter following Landry’s five-yard touchdown run. Rebowe said that the special teams played a big part in the victory against the Cardinals.
“We had our moments with the fake punt and the game winning field goal,” Rebowe said. “We did what we needed to in the kicking and return game.”
Nicholls running back Tobias Lofton rushed for a career high 154 yards against the Cardinals. He and running back Michael Henry combined for over 250 yards. Rebowe said their main focus is winning the game.
“He’s the guy that can go the distance for us, and there was no catching him once he hit it up the middle,” Rebowe said. “We had two guys in the game that rushed for over 100 yards, and if Tuskani was in there we could have had three. They don’t care who gets credit as long as we are putting points on the board.”
UCA will come into Thibodaux Saturday as top five in the conference in both rushing and passing offense. Rebowe said their goal is to dominate the clock and create as many possessions as possible for the offense.
“They have a great quarterback and a solid backfield, as well as a solid offensive line,” Rebowe said. “They are really efficient, and they don’t turn the ball over. We need to have long sustained drives and create turnovers.”
The Bears have the 10th ranked passing defense in the conference, but have 16 interceptions on the season. Rebowe said it is important to attack their defense without playing to their strengths.
“They have about 15 interceptions, but they have only thrown two,” Rebowe said. “We will still try to attack them in the air, but we need to do it without turning it over.”
The Colonels will kick off against the Bears at 6 p.m. this Saturday.
“We’re nowhere near where we need to be, but the guys have definitely been improving every week,” Rebowe said. “We just need to carry this momentum into the last two weeks of the season.”
