The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team looks to recover their winning streak against the University of New Orleans after a loss to Stephen F. Austin State University this past Saturday.

The Colonels came into the SFA game hoping to attain the championship position from the Ladyjacks, who are currently the No. 1 team in the Southland Conference followed by the Lamar University Cardinals. Upon losing, the Colonels remained the No. 3 team in conference with a record of 10-4. The Ladyjacks, 12-2 in conference, secured their position above the Cardinals’ 12-3 conference record by one game.

“It’s kind of bittersweet because right now our goal is to be first place, and we still have a long shot to get there. At least we are sitting at the top of the conference, so that part feels good,” senior guard Jenny Nash said.

Nicholls ended the first half of the SFA game with a tie, scoring 21 to the Ladyjacks 22 points. They continued their quest for victory in the second half, scoring 38 points but falling short to SFA’s 46 points, ending the game with a score of 59-68.

Though the Colonels winning streak came to an end, four players ended the game with double digits. Nash lead the Colonels offensively by scoring 18 points followed by freshman guard Tia Charles with 12 points. Both junior guard Emani White and senior center Shay Arnick followed close behind with 10 points each. The Colonels as a whole shot 43 percent from the field and made 9 three pointers. The team was held back by 23 turnovers during the game.

“I think we didn’t pay attention to the details as much as we should have. We didn’t stick to the scout like we were supposed to and that really cost us,” Nash said.

Prior to the SFA game, the Colonels were on a seven game winning streak, making it not only the first in program history, but also one of the longest win streaks in conference play as well. Included in the seven winning matches were the University of New Orleans Privateers, who lost their last game against the Colonels with a score of 56-40. The Privateers are currently last in conference with a record of 2-12 and are scheduled to play the Colonels Thursday, Feb. 26.

“We need to worry about ourselves, and practice hard the rest of this week. I think we will come out with a win,” Nash said.
