Soccer wants to get back on pitch after cancelled games
The Nicholls State University Women’s soccer team prepares for upcoming games against Northwestern State University Demons and Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks this weekend after rescheduling the last three games due to weather conditions.
“We didn’t play this past Thursday or Sunday, which was unfortunate because we were pumped for the games, and we really wanted to just destroy them. We had two home games the whole season. It’s unlucky because we were supposed to play University of Louisiana-Lafayette, which is our big rival. For me, it’s heartbreaking because it’s my senior year,” midfielder/forward Kristy Tatom said.
“We have a home game on Friday, and hopefully that one doesn’t get rained out. It’s just frustrating because we get pumped up for a game and it gets postponed.”
This weekend, the Colonels play the Demons whose record is 3-11 overall, and the Lumberjacks who are 10-2 overall at home.
“SFA will be a tough game because they’re currently ranked first in our conference. Last year, they made it to the finals and lost, so they’re good. I think their strength is through intimidation because teams know they’re good. We’ve never beat Northwestern since I’ve been here the last three years, but we’ve been real unlucky and had to travel to them on their senior nights. This year, they play us at home, so I’m sure we can take care of business,” Tatom said.
Nicholls has six games left before the Southland Conference Tournament and are currently ranked fifth overall. Tatom, along with her twin sister ,Misty Tatom, are among other seniors, Missy McGuire, Kirsten Cunningham, Amber Moor, Lauren O’Brien, Amanda Boylson and Sarah Tani, who are all looking forward to their last Conference Tournament beginning Nov. 6.
“Last season, it came down to our last game, which is always really dramatic and we played Sam Houston. We ended up winning 3-2, but because of how we were seated in conference (we were fourth seat and they were fifth) that first game. We ended up playing them again the next weekend and lost 1-0. This weekend will be good. Even if we just win one, it’ll put us in a really good position in conference,” Tatom said.
Until the conference tournament, Nicholls will play the next four games at home and their last two games away.
“I really think we’re going to do fine on Friday. I don’t even know if Northwestern has won a game in conference yet, but I really think we’ll beat them. I think Sunday we can beat them if we come out and play like we did against Lamar,” Tatom said.
