Volleyball looks forward to improving confrence record

The Nicholls State University Colonels volleyball team won their match in three sets against Northwestern State University this past Saturday.

The win was only the fifth of the season for the Colonels, who ended their first tournament with a record of 2-1. The Colonels’ record in September was 3-9. This past weekend, the Colonels won their match in three sets, winning set one and two by a score of 25-19, and set three with 26-24.

Coach Tommy Harold said after the win Saturday, “The girls were excited to get things finished, and they are looking to get things rolling for next weekend’s games.”

“The Colonel’s season record is currently 5-10, so the win on Saturday really helped the season,” Harold said.

The Colonels are getting ready for this week’s games Thursday against Sam Houston State and then Saturday against Lamar University. Both matches will be at home starting with Thursday’s game at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday’s game at 2:30 p.m.

Sam Houston will enter the game against the Colonels with a record of 7-7 for the season with a perfect home record at 4-0, but a road record of 1-4 and a neutral site record of 2-3.

For Saturday’s game, Lamar enters with a record of 1-12 overall with their lone win coming from their only home game of the season.
Redshirt sophomore, Kaci Eaton, said “We worked on tip coverage and better defense in practice and it paid off big time.”

Eaton said after the win, “I feel like there is no specific glaring weakness for our team at this point in the season.”

“The team needs to work on their serve and receive game and having better coverage on hitters,” Harold said.

The team feels really confident about what they have been able to accomplish to this point. The goal is always to win, but to also improve and learn as the season progresses.

With the season two months in, the Colonels want to try to improve their overall record, as well as their record in conference play. The season is half over, and the Colonels want to work on getting an even record and putting themselves at a better chance of winning the Conference Title at the end of the season.

“The Colonels’ defense needs to stay disciplined and stay in their zones if they want to be successful,” Harold said.

The Colonels hope to take advantage of the home-court crowd. Leading the way for the Colonels is Eaton with 211 total kills, 4.22 kills per set and 695 total attacks.

Looking ahead to the games for this weekend, the Colonels will look to improve their conference record, which is currently 1-1 for the season. The rest of the season, the Colonels will play conference opponents until the Southland Conference Tournament on Nov. 21 to Nov. 23.
