Nicholls State University’s Student Government Association president Adam LeFort said that SGA has definitely changed him for the better. LeFort is a junior in Management from Thibodaux. LeFort always knew he wanted to go to Nicholls because he was born and raised in Thibodaux. He went to camps at Nicholls, his mother worked on campus and the people he knew here were reason enough for him to stay in Thibodaux, and now Nicholls is his second home. When LeFort was in high school, he “job shadowed” for the Lafourche Parish Government, and the president of SGA worked with him. Lefort took the opportunity that he was given to apply for SGA and began in his freshman year in college. In his freshman year, LeFort was the freshman senator, followed by the campus improvement chair. He then ran for vice president, holding the office for his sophomore year. In the spring of his sophomore year, he ran for president and now holds that office as a junior. LeFort said that he is unsure if he wants to run for a second term, but he plans on representing the students for two years. LeFort said, “It was a blessing that I was vice president as a sophomore because it gave me the opportunity to have two terms.” As SGA President, LeFort hopes to produce more school spirit, promote Nicholls awareness and make the Nicholls student body more like a family. Between tailgates and the Annual Homecoming Bonfire, LeFort hopes to rally more school spirit. He also wants to expand upon the Nicholls Awareness Campaign, which is where the SGA promotes Nicholls to the surrounding cities and lest future students know what to expect, so they can get what they want out of college.
LeFort is also a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Nicholls Student Alumni Association, Circle K international, College Republicans and University of Louisiana System Board Supervisor. He is on the College of Business: Dean’s Student Advisory Board, and he’s in the Honors Program. He also coaches gymnastics outside of school.
Once he’s graduated, LeFort wants to leave Nicholls with an overall happier population.
“I’m trying to impact the freshmen the most because those are the people who, when I’m gone, will still be here,” LeFort said. “They are the future leaders of the campus.”
“I have two years left of college, and I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I want to do,” LeFort said. “Something in business, because I’m a management major.”
LeFort said that being in the SGA gave him leadership skills and time management skills that he will definitely use in the future.
“I learned how to go out and talk to the students and hear what they have to say, being the voice of the students,” Lefort said. The SGA also teaches everyone how to work as a team because they are all working towards the same goal.”
“I look forward to being the voice of the students,” LeFort said. “I am really looking forward to the fall semester.”
