If the genes of Bill Gates and Pavarotti were combined, the outcome would probably be much like computer technician/vocalist Louis Gardener.
Louis Gardener has been working on computers at Nicholls since he enrolled in the summer of 2002.
“I basically take care of all Macintosh problems,” Gardener said.
The fascinating fact is that although Louis is a computer whiz, his major is vocal music education.
Gardener’s first experience with computers occurred when he was ten years old.
“When I was in fifth grade, my dad brought home one of those old Apple computers with the green screen,” Gardener said.
“I was in sheer awe. There was a feeling of wonderment and trepidation. There was the excitement of something new. What’s seen even more unique is that I didn’t know computers would become so important. Regardless of what area you’re in, if you don’t have a general knowledge of computers, it’ll limit job possibilities.”
Shortly after, Gardener’s father purchased a more up to date computer for work. Gardener began reading books and learned to do basic programming. He continued reading and advanced his skills in programming, updating and building computers.
As a sophomore in high school, Gardener was doing freelance repairs for friends of the family.
Although this 2000 Patterson graduate, who arrived at Nicholls with six credit hours in math, is good at what he does, he does not always enjoy it.
“Originally, my major was computer science. After a few changes, I decided on vocal music education,” Gardener said.
Gardener has been singing since his chorus experience as a freshman in his Wyoming high school.
He wants to continue his education as far as he can and eventually teach. Gardener would like to obtain a Ph.D. and teach in a college setting.
Although he will hopefully teach, Gardener still plans to work with computers.
“Computers have become a part of me,” Gardener said. “New advances are made every day, and no one can ever say they’ve totally mastered everything. The curiosity will always be there.”
During his free time, Gardener reads or practices music. He plays tuba in the marching band, is a member of the concert choir and a chamber singer. He is also learning to play the guitar, bass and piano.
