After releasing a new extended play and signing to Rise Records, Memphis May Fire adds to its list of accomplishments over the past year by releasing a new single, “The Sinner,” on March 21.
The Texas five-piece first released a new EP called “Between the Lies” (which earned a 5 out of 5 from me) back in November, and just two months later signed to Rise Records.
In what seemed like overnight, MMF announced that a new full-length album, “The Hollow,” would be released on April 26. A teaser from the album was then posted on YouTube and can be viewed on Rise Records’ YouTube page.
Without any warning (and to my excitement), I woke up on Tuesday morning to a barrage of tweets from lead vocalist Matty Mullins and fellow MMF fans about the release of a new single.
For those who have kept up with MMF in the past, you know that the first full-length, “Sleepwalking,” had a very southern-metal sound. You should also know that the EP, “Between the Lies,” had many more metalcore influences and was heavier overall. Well folks, the new single from the upcoming album has once again pushed the envelope. “The Sinner” is the heaviest song to date.
The song begins similarly to “Gingervitis” from the recent EP with a slow build-up to a heavy verse. In true MMF fashion, Matty Mullins’ vocals are both outstanding and clever. The dude has become one of my favorite vocalists because of his epic screams and amazing singing.
If I tried to break down every single thing I like about this song, I would probably crash the Nicholls server, so I’ll try to explain it the best way I can:
First, imagine the guitar riffs used in Miss May I’s verses, the break beats from Woe Is Me and the effects used by Attack! Attack! Now combine that with the catchy vocals from Of Mice & Men, and you’ve got Memphis May Fire’s new sound. I didn’t think it could be possible to make a song so awesome.
I can remember back in 2009 when I first saw Memphis May Fire. It was on Alesana’s “You’d Be Way Cuter in a Coffin” tour with Asking Alexandria. I’ll admit that the only reason I went to the show was to see Asking Alexandria. I had never really liked Alesana, and I had never heard of the other bands. In order to get a good spot to see AA, I decided that I would watch the band right before them play. Needless to say, I was absolutely blown away by MMF’s performance and ditched my front stage spot for AA to buy a copy of “Sleepwalking.” Since then, it seems like MMF has been absolutely unstoppable. The band has built a huge fan base, and the release of the new album in April can only make them bigger.
Memphis May Fire’s new single, “The Sinner,” earns a 5 out of 5 because it is one of my favorite songs so far. It is now available on iTunes, and you can listen to the track in its entirety on YouTube. Don’t forget to pick up your copy of “The Hollow” on April 26, and check out my review of it after the release.
