Tau Kappa Epsilon Vice President, Randy Dow, and Delta Zeta President, Stephanie Ledet, did not expect to be named 2002 Homecoming King and Queen on Oct. 12.
“The whole week they had a lot of people saying it was a possibility, but I never really got my hopes up,” Dow, mass communications junior from Chalmette, said.
“I was just very, very shocked. I was happy, but I was shocked.”
Ledet, pre-medical biology junior from Thibodaux, said she did not expect being named homecoming queen either.
“Because of all the hurricanes, the voting this year was a little different,” she said.
“No one on the court knew who to expect.”
Ledet said it was very exciting and overwhelming.
“I felt truly honored that the student body had chosen me.”
The most memorable part of homecoming night for Dow was having all his family there.
“It took them a while to get to Thibodaux to come see me, and to have about 15 of my family members there was kind of like a boost to my emotions,” Dow said.
“We found out he has loads of friends,” Deborah Dow, Dow’s mother, said.
“We’d been knowing it, but it showed when they called out his name, and they all screamed for him,” she said.
Ledet’s most memorable moment was when they announced her name as homecoming queen.
“I was so surprised I just froze for a second,” she said.
“All my close friends and family were there, and to me, that is what really made the night special.”
Dow said it was interesting that even though the court was so diverse, everyone was still able to get along great.
“We found ways to hang out with each other. I got to know some pretty interesting people,” Dow said.
Ledet said she enjoyed the parade on Thursday because the court met before the parade and got to know one another.
“We had so much fun. Then, we went to the parade and had the best time,” Ledet said.
The court met again after the parade, and Ledet said, “We joked around with each other all night. We had a blast.”
“Anyone of the other girls on the court also deserved the honor. I was glad I was able to share my experience with them,” she said.
Dow said the greatest compliment he received all night was from his mom.
“My mom told me that this is the most she has ever been proud of anyone in our whole entire family. It kind of pumped me up,” Dow said.
“He has really achieved a lot. Besides being proud, we love him,” Deborah Dow said.
Ledet said it meant a lot to her when people she loves and respects told her that they were proud of her.
Brenda Ledet, Ledet’s mom, said her daughter is amazing.
“Stephanie really thought she would not be queen,” Brenda Ledet said.
“It’s been an unbelievable year for her. And all the credit goes to her. We are extremely proud of her,” she said.
Ledet said having Jamie Boudreaux, last years’ homecoming queen, there made the night that more special.
“There is no one else I would have rather received the crown from,” Ledet said.
“Jamie and I have been really good friends ever since we were freshmen, and we have shared many experiences together,” she said.
“It was just great to be able to share this with her knowing she knew what it felt like,” Ledet said.
In addition to homecoming king, Dow has also been honored as 2001 Orientation Leader of the Year and 2002 Greek God. He also received the Tau Kappa Epsilon Chapter Adviser’s Award for 2002.
Dow has served as historian of Tau Kappa Epsilon and has been a two-year orientation leader. He is currently the mascot for the new student section, and he is on the special events committee of the Student Programming Association.
Ledet has received various awards while at Nicholls. On the university level, Ledet was honored as Orientation Leader of the year in 2001, Outstanding Student Worker at Nicholls in 2002 and Ms. Nicholls in 2002.
The Nicholls’ Kappa Alpha Chapter recognized Ledet as the Outstanding New Member as a freshman in 2000 and as Dream Girl in 2002.
Ledet also received the Delta Zeta Spirit Award in 2000, and for the last two years, she has received the Point System Award for her participation in Delta Zeta.
Ledet was the Outstanding Junior for Delta Zeta in 2002 for her region. And this summer, Ledet was the first woman from Nicholls to be selected by Delta Zeta Sorority’s National Council as a recipient for the Florence Hood Miner Award.
She was also recognized by Who’s Who Among College Students in 2001.
Ledet has been an orientation leader for three years and a member of the Kappa Alpha Chapter of Delta Zeta. She served as secretary for her first year as a member of Delta Zeta and vice president of membership for her second year.
Dow and Ledet would both like to thank Delta Zeta Sorority for nominating them. Dow also thanks his fraternity for supporting him homecoming night. Ledet thanks everyone who worked hard to make Homecoming week such a success.
