How long have you been on the SGA? I’ve been on the SGA for three and a half years, since I was a freshman.
What positions have you held?
I was a senator, then I became campus improvements committee head, director of rights and grievances and now I’m the president.
Most of your campaign was centered around a diversity plan.
What is the diversity plan?
The diversity plan is a plan to increase diversity at the University. It’s to help minority students and non-traditional students, etc., and to make them feel more a part of the University. The academic curriculum is being reviewed by the faculty senate right now. We are increasing diversity activities. There’s Hispanic Heritage month and a Diversity month coming up. On the state level, we’re trying to
push a diversity requirement, where you’d have to take a diversity course before you graduate. It’s more in-depth, but we have a copy of the plan available if anyone wants to look at it.
How did you come up with your diversity plan?
As director of rights and grievances, I had a lot of students
complaining about the lack of foreign languages and other diversity courses offered at Nicholls. I went to a conference at Texas A&M last year and I went through diversity training. Then it hit me: I thought this could really work on our campus.
How long do you think it will take for you to accomplish your goals?
The diversity plan is a three year plan. I think this year, we’re breaking ground. So, I’m going to accomplish as much as I can this year, and after that I don’t know.
The whole plan takes three years. Hopefully you will have
graduated by then. Since you can’t get everything done in one
year, what do you want to accomplish in your time as president?
I want to let people know that diversity is a problem. I want to
focus and increase awareness, which is the first step.
In one of last semester’s issues of the Nicholls Worth, a reader
stated in a letter to the editor that she overheard two faculty
members making racial slurs after seeing an interracial couple.
Also, license plates and stickers with Confederate flags are
prevalent on vehicles around campus. To increase campus
diversity, the cooperation of students and faculty will be needed.
How do you plan on overcoming these already existent barriers?
It’s going to take a lot of support from the administration and
faculty. Hopefully, they will endorse the diversity plan. The
administration seems to be pretty open and receptive. I know
it’s not easy. We’ll take each barrier as it comes. If we have to
break a few necks to get some things done, we’ll have to do that.
We’re so used to hearing about Alcie the President. What do you
do in your spare time besides live in your SGA office and go to
eboard meetings?
I play computer games where I try to conquer the world.
Are you currently single?
Yes, I am.
Describe your ideal companion.
I’m not looking for anybody right now, because I’m too busy. But, I like a woman with an attitude, that’s basically it. I want someone who’ll talk back and say what’s on her mind. If that’s in the paper I’ll kill you!! I’m just joking.
