A natural gas leak in Peltier Hall on Tuesday caused many classes to be cancelled there because the air was not safe to breathe. However, night classes held in the building were able to be conducted as usual. One of the fittings at a joint on a pipe began leaking shortly after the electricity went out Tuesday morning, according to Michael Davis, Assistant Vice President for Administration.
Pipe fitters came to Nicholls and changed out one of the pipe fittings to repair the leak, Davis said. The fitters also tightened the other joints to ensure another gas leak would not soon occur.
When the system was initially installed, tests were run and everything seemed to be fine with the system, David said.
“These things just happen sometimes,” Davis said.
Classes in Powell Hall and White Hall were also cancelled for the day due to a problem with the air conditioning system. The air system in the buildings around the quad is on a loop system, which means all the systems are connected. When the electricity went out, the buildings lost air conditioning completely, and it became too hot to teach inside.
The maintenance department worked to get everything fixed, according to Davis.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience to students,” Davis said.
