An idea, which originated during the planning of Women’s History Month, was carried out on March 6 when more than fifty people attended the first annual Woman of Achievement Awards luncheon in the Student Union Cotillion Ballroom. Guest speakers were Jennifer Marusak, communications director for Governor Mike Foster and Representative Diane Winston, chair of the Louisiana Women’s Policy and Research Commission.
This award recognized one Nicholls staff member and one student whose achievements have contributed to future opportunities for other women, who serve as healthy role models for other women, have contributed to the advancement of their field of study, career or interest and contribute to the historical legacy of women.
At the beginning of the semester Dr. Michele Caruso, director of Student Services and University Counseling Center, put out flyers and e-mails asking for nominations. Once she received the ten faculty and four student nominations, the forms were reviewed by an off-campus selection committee, which consisted of women in Thibodaux’s business community.
Besides the luncheon, recipients received plaques, which were donated by Pro-NSU.
“The two winners stand out because they are very involved, they are advocates for women, and they are helpful to non-traditional women students,” Caruso said.
Dr. Mary Capps of New Orleans, professor of sociology, received the faculty member award. Capps has been a faculty member and mentor to students since 1978. Her two created sociology courses at Nicholls educate students about assault and domestic violence. She is a recipient of the Nicholls State Division of Student Affairs Recognition Award for outstanding service.
Capps also speaks at local, state and national events about women’s issues. She is a member of several standing groups for the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and took part in the Autonomous Women’s Movement of New Orleans in the 1970s.
Barbara Kitzman, legal assistant studies sophomore from New Orleans, was the student recipient of this award. Kitzman, who is the assistant house director in Ellender Residence Hall, works with women on a day-to-day basis. She sponsors activities and programs on campus.
“I was honored just to nominated, but to win the award really touched me because there are so many other hard workers,” Kitzman said.
Kitzman is also a member of the Army National Guard and was recently chosen Louisiana Soldier of the Year. She was a member of the group that sang the national anthem in the 2002 Super Bowl pre-game show in New Orleans.
