Annette Breaux, teacher induction coordinator for the College of Education, is also the co-author of “Seven Simple Secrets: What the Best Teachers Know and Do,” which has a selling rate of 2500 copies per month.
Q: What is your book about?
A: “Teaching is not that complicated. My co-author and I have found seven things that teachers have in common.”
Q: What are the seven secrets?
A: “The secret of planning, the secret of classroom management, the secret of instruction, the secret of attitude, the secret of professionalism, the secret of effective discipline and the secret of motivation and inspiration.”
Q: Where did you come up with the seven secrets?
A: “From my own experience of training teachers and from when I was a teacher and did research in classrooms across the country, I found seven things that most effective teachers consistently do.”
Q: What made you decide to write a book?
A “This is my fifth book. Effective teaching has always been a part of me, and it came out of teaching experience, motivational speaking and my audio CDs.”
Q: What will teachers find useful about this book?
A: “The book is user friendly, you don’t have to read it cover to cover; techniques are easy to implement and it is based on what the best teachers already know and do.”
Q: Does the book work for all teachers no matter what grade they teach or their level of professionalism?
A: “Absolutely, the book has been so successful because its based on principles of effective teaching which are applicable whether teaching students in a classroom, coaching or teaching five year olds.”
Q: Did you expect it to be this successful?
A: ” No, I am pleasantly surprised with any success my books have. When my first solo book was published, “101 Answers for New Teachers and Their Mentors” I remember being elated when 1,000 were sold, and now it has sold 60,000 copies so far.
Q: Where did your inspiration to write this book come from?
A: ” From teaching and my experience working with teachers. If you can convince a kid you believe in them and care about them, then you can get them to do just about anything, and it’s the same for adults. As educators we usually focus on the latest fads and programs of the day, and we tend to forget that any program is only as good as the teacher implementing it. Effective teaching is not rocket science. There are simple principles in teaching in general, and I wanted to share those seven simple secrets.”
Q: How long did it take for you to write?
A: “It took about ten months.”
Q: How can someone purchase your book?
A: “In the University Boostore, directly from the publisher (Eye on Education), online and at Barnes and Noble.
