Members of the SGA Senate voiced their concerns about attendance at SGA meetings and allowing non-Senate members to vote on committees Wednesday in the Plantation Suite. Director of Student Rights and Grievances Shawn Little, education senior from Raceland, said that he is talking to professors about offering students incentives such as bonus points for attending SGA meetings. Little is planning to hand out letters to departmental deans on this issue.
Another issue discussed involved the SGA Corollary. University College Senator Brittni Lipscomb, general studies senior from Gonzales, moved to strike Article Nine from the corollary, which states that any non-senator, fee-paying SGA member would be allowed to vote on any SGA committee except for the finance and judiciary committees. Senators debated this issue, and President Olinda Ricard argued that students might be more inclined to join SGA as a senator if they were able to vote and sit on committees.
Senators voted on this amendment, and it did not pass.
On August 24 and 25, Ricard traveled to Baton Rouge to meet with the Board of Regents. One topic discussed was the athletic fee referendum for the September ballad, which the Board of Regents approved.
During the President’s report, Ricard said that the University might consider developing a policy for Facebook.com and similar programs due to increasing ethical concerns about the misuse of these sites and of students putting too much personal information about themselves.
It was also announced that on Friday, September 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. SGA will sponsor a Free Speech Alley. There will be a raffle, and the winner will get to park in Ricard’s parking place for one month.
