The Nicholls Greeks invite everyone to attend the Turkey Bowl today at 2 p.m. in the parking lot behind the University Police station. The 14 campus Greek organizations spent the week participating in activities including track and field events, goofy games, and game room tournaments.
“We have Greek Week for two reasons: to celebrate and show unity for the Greeks, and to have fun,” LaToya Bailey, Greek adviser, said.
The festivities began with a community walk from City Hall to the front of the Student Union. Mayor Caillouet spoke to the Greeks before they began the thirty minute walk, she said.
The biggest event of the week was Songfest, which was held Tuesday night in Peltier Auditorium, she said. There, Greeks entertained other students and faculty members with song and dance routines.
Admission to Songfest was either one dollar or two can goods, all of which will be donated to a local charity. Donations and pledges will be accepted for today’s Turkey Bowl games to benefit MDA, though these are not required.
The Turkey Bowl is a bowling game with a twist. Students will attempt to knock over sand-filled two-liter bottles by rolling frozen turkeys down the bowling lanes, which are made of Visqueen plastic and two-by-fours, Bailey said.
“This will be our first time doing (the Turkey Bowl). A young lady who currently works for MDA used to be the activities director here and she figured it would make a really good community service project for the students to do,” Bailey said.
“(Greek Week) gives (the Greeks) a chance to do things with some of the other Greeks that they may not get to do on a regular basis. The community benefits because they get to see one of the good sides of Greek life. Also, they get a good laugh,” Bailey said.
Greeks enthusiastically support Greek Week, which has been on campus since the first Greek organization evolved, she said.
“My favorite activity is Songfest because it is a good time for all organizations to come together,” Courtney Acosta, special education junior from Houma, and Delta Zeta member, said.
“Even though it is a competition, it is a great sense of unity,” she said.
Greek Week will officially come to a close tonight with a banquet.
