Coach Phyllis Guedry knew that her team was in for a challenge when they went up against Louisiana State University last Wednesday. Despite their fall to LSU, the Lady Colonels were recumbent in their tripleheader against Sam Houston State this past weekend.
LSU 12, Nicholls State 0
In nonconference softball action last Wednesday, the Lady Colonels fell 12-0 to the LSU Lady Tigers. During the battle at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, the Lady Tigers blasted out 13 hits in five innings against the Lady Colonels.
The Lady Tigers (9-3) scored a single run in the first inning before scoring five runs in the second, and six runs in the fourth. Nicholls’ Stephanie Sasser and junior Duffi Matherne each registered single hits during the game.
“I feel that we entered the game rather timid,” Guedry said. “This led to the result of the game. I think if we would’ve been a little more confident, we could’ve come out on top.”
Freshman Nicole Wagner took the loss for the Lady Colonels allowing six hits and six runs in her 1 2/3 inning of play. Sophomore Fallon Cancienne came on to close the match out, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and walking two Lady Tigers.

The Lady Colonels managed to win the three game series against Sam Houston State this weekend, winning two of the three games played.
In the first match, the Lady Colonels allowed the Lady Bearkats to score a run in the top of the seventh inning, to break a 2-2 tie and take the victory.
Nicholls’ Julie Rodriguez led her team offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Kyna Boyer opened up the scoring in the fourth inning with a single, stealing second and third. Rodriguez brought in Boyer and later scored two batters on a double by Sasser.
“I feel that we played pretty well today,” Guedry said. “I feel that tomorrow we are going to come out strong.”
They did just that the next day defeating the Lady Bearkats twice. Wagner picked up victories in both games as Nicholls snapped out of its offensive slump, pounding out 17 hits in the two games.
In the opener, Nicholls scored three runs in the opening inning on a RBI single by Matherne and a pair of wild pitches by Sam Houston starter Aydrien Guajardo. At the bottom of the fourth, 12 runs were scored by Nicholls. The Bearkats did manage to score three times in the fifth inning, but the game was halted by the 8-run rule, giving the Lady Colonels a victory.
In the second game, the Colonels fell behind as Sam Houston scored in the top of the third. Brimming from the offensive confidence it generated in the first game, Nicholls responded immediately, plating a pair of runs by Boyer and Sarah Eads in its ensuing at bat. Nicholls tacked on another run in the sixth on an RBI double off of the bat of senior Monica Hebert.
“There was a difference in the way we played today,” Guedry said. “We didn’t play to lose, and that made the difference from the LSU game last week.”
The Lady Colonels will take the field tonight in a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m. at Lady Colonels’ softball field.
