Nicholls State University soccer player Keisha Brown is one of many players on the womens’ soccer roster who is not from the bayou region.
Brown, senior defensive center-midfielder, grew up in Cedar Hill, Texas. Other teammates come in from even further places such as Florida, California, Arizona, Colorado, Canada, Ireland and England.
“I grew up playing several sports, but I stuck with soccer,” Brown said. “I played club soccer in Texas, which is a big deal there. That is what helped me first get noticed by college programs.”
Brown said that the adjustment was not too hard when she first moved to Thibodaux.
“I felt at home right away, and because of the size of Nicholls, I know so many people, and it is easy to make connections.”
The Colonels currently have a record of 6-8-1, and Brown, who is hoping the team will make it to conference, will be a contributing force to the rest of the season.
Q: Why soccer, and how long have you played the sport?
A: I played several sports before I went to college, but I excelled most in soccer. This may be so because I have been playing since I was four years old.
Q: Do you enjoy playing for Nicholls?
A: I love playing for Nicholls. I did not know at first that I would be coming here, though. I was being recruited by another school, but I decided to come to Nicholls because I felt more at home here. This University is the perfect size, and I receive great one-on-one contact with my teachers.
Q: What are your hopes for the rest of the season?
A: My hopes and my teammates’ hopes are to win and make it to conference. Though we have some loses, where we are as a team now is an improvement from where we were my freshman season. We definitely have the potential right now though.
Q: If not soccer, what other sports could you see yourself playing?
A: I think I possibly would be playing volleyball, though I’m not sure if I would have been recruited or not. I used to play in high school.
Q: Has soccer helped you with school and your life?
A: It has definitely helped me. It helps structure my life and stay organized.
Q: What is your favorite soccer team?
A: I love my home state, so any team from Texas. Also, I enjoy watching any USA team, men or women. The women’s world cup last summer was pretty exciting, especially since the U.S. did so well.
Q: Do you have any role models?
A: My parents are my role models because they have always encouraged me with everything that I have done in my life.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: I am a pretty tough person. Also, I am calm under pressure.
