With the Student Government Association’s final summer meeting, members feel more prepared for the fall semester. The SGA discussed several topics, including the renovations to the Student Union, the reopening of Beauregard Hall, the implementation of the new smoking policy, maintenance done to the pool at La Maison du Bayou and plans for the recreation center. Brittany Taraba, SGA president, said the summer meetings have been successful, and students will be able to see the culmination of these meetings in the following months. “Everyone has been working hard this summer,” Taraba said. “Students will be a lot happier in the fall. I think it will be a really good semester.” Taraba said one place their productivity can be seen is in the work done by Louis Raiford, director of student rights and grievances, who has been working hard to rectify incidences of student discontent. John Lombardo, SGA vice president, said he is looking forward to working with the new senators who were appointed at the last meeting. “It will be a very productive semester,” Lombardo said. “I’m looking forward to it. I feel comfortable with the Senate.” After the meeting, Taraba went into detail about some of the topics discussed. She said the contracts dealing with the renovations to the Student Union have been finished, but are waiting for final approval and agreement. “Sodexo will be paying for the renovations, Chick-fil-A will be leaving and Jazzman’s Cafe will have a stand alone section,” Taraba said. However, it is undetermined when these renovations will be completed. Another change Taraba spoke of that will occur at the University in the fall is the conversion of the campus to a completely tobacco-free environment. Taraba said e-mails sent to students about this topic are done so from an unmonitored account, which is why they urge students not to respond to them. Students who wish to voice concerns about the policy should send them directly to the SGA if they wish to have them responded to. Lastly, Taraba said she would continue to work towards getting the repairs done to Ayo pool so it can be reopened. “I’m working on it,” Taraba said. “I’m trying to see if it’s possible to get money to put towards that. Only two problems need to be repaired.” The two problems that need to be repaired are the cracked liner and a functioning problem with the pumping. The close of the SGA’s summer meetings has not only given members two extra chances to discuss these particular topics, but also gives them additional experience that one member believes could help later. Lombardo said these summer meetings have helped to make the SGA become a more efficient group. “It makes everything go smoother,” Lombardo said.
