When the Colonels’ baseball team took the field for the first time this year, many newcomers were given a chance to show what they had to bring to the Nicholls team. Among those newcomers was a Southland Conference standout. In only his first appearance this season, junior Jake Ritchie was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday following a standout performance in the Colonels’ three-game sweep of Troy State this past weekend at Didier Field.
The junior from Thibodaux began his career as a Colonel in fine style, slamming a grand slam in the sixth inning of last Friday¡s 27-4 trashing of the Trojans.
The graduate of E.D. White Catholic High School finished the weekend going five for nine with three doubles and five RBI¡s. Ritchie, who transferred to NSU from Bossier Parish Community College, finished the three games with 11 total bases and an on-base percentage of 66.7 percent.
