The 2001 intramural flag football season ended at Peltier Park Tuesday night. The games featured the Untouchables and Phi Mu representing the women, and the Raw Dawgs and the All Stars respresenting the men.
Each of the four teams will participate in the state championship, which will be held at Nicholls on Nov.17-18.
“We had a great tournament. We got four wonderful teams playing tonight. They are playing hard, and each team should do a great job representing the university at the state championship,” Mike Matherine, director of campus recreation, said.
In the first game, the Untouchables defeated Phi Mu 20-0.
The Untouchables offense scored first when quarterback Iris Cognevich connected with wide receiver Kristy Mire to give the Untouchables an early 6-0 lead.
Phi Mu quarterback Ashlee Rizk received tremendous pressure from the Untouchables defense, which was led by defensive lineman Kenya Fields with two quarterback sacks.
The Untouchables scored again when Cognevich tossed another touchdown to Mire to give the Untouchables a 12-0 lead at halftime.
On their first drive of the second half, Cognevich ran in for another touchdown to give the Untouchables a commanding 20-0 lead.
Defensively for the Untouchables, defensive back Denita Prout added one interception and defensive lineman Alicia Mack recorded one sack.
Phi Mu could not convert on the Untouchables defense during the second half. The Untouchables ran out the clock and celebrated their first school championship.
Untouchables coach Curtis Johnson knew how important this games was to his players.
“This game was very important. The girls have worked hard all year for this game, and they deserve it because they played well together,” Johnson said.
“Our defense and offense executed, our recievers caught their passes, and our running back made plays tonight. We were just untouchable tonight,” Cognevich said.
Although they were defeated, Phi Mu has a lot to be proud of.
“We made Phi Mu history this year. Because we never made it to state competition, this means a lot to us. No one ever expected us to make it this far,” Rizk, Phi Mu team captain, said.
Over the next two weeks, both teams will prepare for state competiton.
“We are going to keep our offense together, learn some trick plays, and keep our defense tight,” Melonie Clement, Untouchables team captain, said.
“We need to work on our defense, and catching our passes,” Scott Thompson, Phi Mu team captain, said.
In the second game of the night, the Raw Dawgs defeated the 504 Boys 29-22 in the men’s championship finals.
The two rivals fought each other hard throughout the night.
The 504 Boyz scored first on a touchdown when quarterback Cornell Cornish connected to wide receiver Edwin Johnson for an early 6-0 lead.
Raw Dawgs quarterback Duriel Hayes answered the score with a quarterback sneak to cut the lead to 7-6.
After a huge pass play from quarterback Darveltra Blakes to wide receiver Cephas Williams, the 504 Boyz scored again when Blake connected to wide receiver Raney Bibbins. The 504 Boyz led at the half 14-6.
The Raw Dawgs started their comeback as Hayes ran in for another touchdown to cut the lead to 14-13.
The game changed momentum when the Raw Dawgs defense came up with two points off of a safety.
Leading 15-14 late in the game, Hayes found wide receiver Reginald Moses in the endzone for the touchdown to make the score 22-14.
With under a minute left to play, Blakes cut the lead to 22-21 on a quarterback sneak. The 504 Boyz tied the game after converting the two point attempt to take the game to sudden death overtime.
The Raw Dawgs scored first in the overtime session as Hayes tossed a touchdown pass to wide receiver Byron McPhearson to take a 29-22 lead.
The defense of the Raw Dawgs forced the 504 Boyz to a crucial fourth down play when defensive lineman Calvin Lafiton won the game with a quarterback sack on Blakes.
After losing last year in the finals, the Raw Dawgs finally won the school championship.
“It feels really good. We didn’t win it all last year, but we finally got it this year,” Hayes said.
Since the competition at the state championship will get tougher, both teams know mentally and physically they need to get better.
“We have to be more patient and concentrate more. We also need to adjust and take one game at a time,” Lafition, Raw Dawgs team captain, said.
“We have to improve more on rushing the opposing quarterback, and we need to get more physical,” Blake, 504 Boyz team captain, said.
