Back in the quiet hallway in Stopher Gym, coaches spend their days revising drills, counseling players, talking to media, and handling the financial matters of the team. The Nicholls men’s basketball coaches have been guiding and preparing the players for the upcoming season. Ricky Broussard, head coach of the team, has been looking forward to the start of the promising season. With eight returning players and four newcomers, the men are ready to advance into the season.
Coach Broussard promises a very new and different team from last year.
“Last year we had two inside players that were kind of our go-to guys,” Broussard said. “If we needed a basket, we tried to work it inside to either Arthur Haralson or Chris Bacon. [They were our two inside guys] This year we are more of a perimeter-based team. I strongly think that most of our scoring will come from perimeter players.
“We will be at a four perimeter offense because of the many outstanding players that are good at these positions, with only one post player. So we are opening up the floor for many of our players to play many different positions,” he said.
Coach Broussard expressed his gratitude for the leadership on the team.
“I am blessed with the leadership that we have on this team this year. All of the returning players are quality people. They all have the character that is needed in the leadership roles. When we start talking about Reggie Williams, Zach Ray and Shane Beaudean; these are all young men who know the game and that are ultimate team players,” said Broussard.
“Then, if you throw Beau O’Quinn and Ernest Porter in
with them, two players who have gained the respect of the whole team, the leadership is monstorous. This may be one of the best strengths that we have,” he said.
Another major strength that has aroused from the team has been its amazing team spirit. Coach Broussard stated his view on the unity of the team.
“I am seeing a group of guys who are all working hard together as a cohesive unit. There have no free-loaders. Everyone has paid the price equally and are all up to the challenges that this season may bring. They seem to play well together, work hard together and I think that they will be a real solid unit, which is not always easy to achieve. So far, the guys have shown that they can be this kind of team.”
The men’s basketball team will kickoff its season next week. The Colonels will play their first home game on Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. against the University of New Orleans.
