The student senate passed a motion making changes to the rules and procedures, in addition to tabling two motions, each exceeding $1,000 at the Student Government Association meeting last week. A new stipulation regarding the allocation of funds to student organizations was approved.
Now, the amount of money the SGA gives to a student organization must not exceed the amount raised by the organization for the purposes for which funds are being requested. The amount allocated cannot exceed $1,000.
Also, any department on campus bringing a motion before the senate must now have approval of its department head and its vice president before coming before the senate.
Additionally, the senate can no longer allocate funds to closed student organizations. A closed organization is defined as organization whose membership is based on invitations.
A motion calling for the allocation of $1,356 to purchase two metal benches for Bollinger Memorial Student Union was tabled.
Also tabled was a motion calling for $1,928 to purchase 68 chairs for the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute.
In other business, Matthew Ford, Arts and Sciences senator and head of the campus improvements committee, spoke of the “air-conditioning issues” in Beauregard and Peltier Halls.
“Students are complaining that it’s too hot. The difference in climate between Beauregard and Peltier is pretty severe,” Ford said.
Jaret Hubbel spoke of the “senate attitude toward purchasing of T-shirts.” He said the senate will bring a motion on the subject at the end of the semester.
“Just a few facts that I’d like everybody to know, T-shirts have been paid for by the SGA for the last three years. They have been a source of SGA promotion.
“Last semester, we spent $500 on 20 Polo shirts. This semester, what we would be looking at would be $300 on 50 SGA T-shirts,” Hubbell said.
