It only took five innings for the Lady Colonels softball team to dispose of the Northwestern State Demons 11-1 Sunday afternoon. The win comes after the Demons and Colonels split their double header on Saturday. The game was called after five innings because of the eight-run rule.
“We ran the bases well all day today,” head softball coach Jenny Parsons said. “We put pressure on them and got the big hits when we needed them. Our offense did an excellent job today.”
The game started off slow for the Lady Colonels as sophomore short-stop Kat Harrell let a ball go through her legs on the first at bat of the game, enabling junior infielder Margaret Patterson to advance all the way to third.
Three batters later, junior second-baseman Lyndsey Gorski doubled, scoring the Demons’ lone run.
After going three up and down in the bottom half of the first, The Lady Colonels responded in a big way by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second.
Senior second baseman Brandi Hahn reached second on an error to start the inning.
Freshman outfielder Danielle Clayton moved Hahn to third on a bunt single.
After loading the bases on a fielder’s choice, freshman infielder Leslie Bourgeois walked, scoring Hahn and tying the score 1-1.
On the next at bat, junior catcher Jacqueline Pacheco ripped a two R.B.I. double, putting the Lady Colonels ahead 3-1.
The scoring continued in the second as senior outfielder Teri Clouatre doubled then advanced on the throw. Bourgeois scored on the play and Pancheco was tossed out at home.
Clouatre scored on a deep fly out by Harrell, putting the Lady Colonels ahead 5-1.
The final two runs of the inning came on one swing of the bat.
Junior third baseman Leah Peterson ripped a two-run home run with two outs to cap off the scoring for the Lady Colonels in the second inning.
The remaining four runs for the Lady Colonels came in the bottom of the forth inning.
After Harrell and Butler got on base, they advanced on a double steal. Peterson added two more RBI’s after a single, which out the Lady Colonels up 9-1.
Sophomore first baseman Amy Thibodeaux knocked in two more later in the inning to increase the Lady Colonels lead 11-1.
Sophomore pitcher Krystalin Ensminger improved her record to 4-5 after giving up one run on three hits while striking out two.
Parsons said she was pleased with Ensminger’s performance.
“She did a good job and that’s all I asked her,” Parsons said. “I said we’re going to keep the ball down and make some plays. We made a couple errors, that’s the only reason they got that one run was because we made an error. That’s all I ask from our pitchers is just to give them a chance to win the game and give offense a chance to win the game.”
Junior Amanda Glenn dropped to 7-14 on the season after giving up seven runs on six hits through 2.1 innings of work.
On Saturday, the two teams played a double header.
After trailing 5-3 going into the seventh, the Demons rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs and taking the 6-5 victory.
Game two saw similar results but for opposite teams.
Trailing 6-3 in the seventh, the Lady Colonels rebounded by scoring three runs, forcing extra innings. The Lady Colonels added another in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 7-6 victory.
The Lady Colonels improved their record to 9-19 overall and 5-7 in the Southland Conference while the Demons dropped to 15-21 overall and 4-6 in the Southland Conference.
