Baseball
Catcher Jose Higuera was named the LSWA Hitter of the Week, announced the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association Tuesday morning. RHP Sean Morgan of Tulane was named the LSWA Pitcher of the Week.
A senior from Douglas, Ariz., Higuera batted .444 (8-of-18) with two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored, including a 3-for-4 outing with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in Game 1 of a Southland Conference series at Stephen F. Austin. Defensively, Higuera had 21 putouts and five assists, including catching four of six runners attempting to steal.
Higuera, usually the Colonels’ third baseman, was forced to play out of position the entire week due to academic suspensions on the team. Although limited to a traveling party of 18 players – with no more than 11 receiving playing time in each of its four games last week – Nicholls still came away with a 3-1 record, recording wins over No. 14 Tulane and Stephen F. Austin.
