University Police is currently searching for the two suspects involved in the armed robbery that occurred Saturday at La Maison du Bayou.”We’re working on some leads right now,” Steve Tullis, Lieutenant for University Police, said. “I can’t say the leads at this time, but we have spoken to several witnesses in the area. The crime did happen.”
Around 9 p.m. the student got out of his vehicle in the La Maison parking lot behind building seven. He began walking towards his apartment and passed one individual. He then saw another individual standing in a dark corner next to building seven, according to Tullis.
“The guy facing the building turned around and pointed a gun at him,” Tullis said. “The other guy he had just passed turned around, got behind him and took his wallet out of his pocket. He had no money on him, so the guy with the gun hit him on the cheek, gave his wallet back and ran.”
The student was then taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries. According to Tullis, the wound on the student’s cheek required three sutures.
This incident is still under investigation. According to a police advisory, the suspect holding the gun was a black man.. He is approximately 5’8″ tall with a medium slim-build. At the time the crime was committed, he was wearing a black ski mask, a dark hooded jacket and blue jeans.
The other suspect is also a black man. He is approximately 6’1″ tall with a slim build. He was wearing a dark, short-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes with white markings at the time the crime was committed, according to the police advisory.
The University is still safe, Tullis said, and this is an isolated incident. Tullis said that University Police believe that this is not a serial or on-going crime.
“This is the first one we’ve had in a very long time,” Tullis said.
Both suspects and anyone who helped plan the crime could be charged with aggravated robbery, according to Tullis, and extended prison terms will be the consequence for this crime.
“It’s a stiff penalty,” Tullis said.
According to a police advisory, a cash reward is being offered for any information leading to the arrest and apprehension of the suspects. Anyone with any knowledge pertaining to this case is asked to contact University Police.
Students should always be aware of their surroundings and should take normal precautions, according to Tullis.
“Students shouldn’t travel alone, especially at night,” Tullis said. “Stay in groups.
