The Grambling Tigers (8-1, 5-1) outscored the Colonels 27-16 in the second half to take home a 37-28 win over Nicholls Saturday at Guidry Stadium. The Colonels scored the first two touchdowns of the game in the first quarter, which allowed them to take an early 12-0 lead.
After the Colonel defense shut down Grambling on its first drive of the game, the Nicholls offense did not waste any time getting on the score board.
With the drive starting from the Nicholls 37 yard line, the Colonels took the ball 63 yards in 10 plays for the score. A 24-yard pass from Josh Son to Phillip Brock from the Nicholls 42 yard line put the Nicholls, in the red zone, on the Grambling 18 yard line. Five plays later, Colt Coletti rushed for a four-yard touchdown. John Manly’s kick attemp failed, but the Colonels still held a 6-0 lead.
Nicholls linebacker James Miller intercepted Tiger quarterback Bruce Eugene’s pass at the Grambling 39 yard line and returned it 30 yards downfield to the Grambling nine yard line.
Once again, Coletti was given the honor of putting six on the board when he manned out a nine-yard run into the end zone for the touchdown. Although he found his way to the end zone for the score, he could not find it for the two-point conversion, and the Colonels held a 12-0 lead over the ninth ranked team in the nation.
Grambling was able to generate some offense in the bottom of the first quarter when its offense drove the ball 51 yards down field in 10 plays, which ultimately resulted in a 47-yard field goal by Brian Morgan, and with 14:08 left in the second quarter Nicholls held a 12-3 lead.
Grambling scored again on its third drive of the second half, with 5:40 remaining in the first half, when quarterback Randy Hymes ran the ball for a one-yard touchdown. Morgan’s extra point put Grambling within two points of the Colonels’ lead with a score of 12-10.
