THIBODAUX, La. – Gary Gallup, Nicholls State’s Colonel
Club Executive Director has been promoted to Associate
Athletics Director for External Relations, NSU Athletics
Director Rob Bernardi announced today. Gallup will continue
to oversee the areas of corporate sponsorships, marketing and
promotions and radio while maintaining his role as Bernardi’s
right-hand man.”Calling this a well-deserved promotion is an understatement,”
Bernardi said. “Gary has been someone who has hit the ground
running and made an incredible impact on our athletics
department, he is certainly well-deserving.”
Since arriving at Nicholls State last February, Gallup has hit the
ground running, spearheading NSU’s aggressive marketing
campaign and procured a number of corporate sponsors and
Colonel Club members while serving as the voice of Colonel
football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball.
In mid-October, he organized “NSU Hoops Madness at
Midnight” which kicked off the 2001-2002 basketball season.
The event, held at Stopher Gym, was a rousing success as he
brought together the student body, community and athletics
department.
Well-versed in the areas of fund raising, marketing, broadcasting
and promotions, he has been involved in intercollegiate athletics
at the Division I level since 1977 and is now reunited with
Bernardi, someone he has worked closely with given their
association with the Sun Belt Conference for 11 years. Gallup
came to Nicholls State following nearly three years as Director
of Athletic Marketing at the University of New Orleans. While
on the Lakefront, Gallup developed and implemented a total
marketing plan and time management schedule for the athletics
department. He also served as the Voice of the Privateers,
calling UNO men’s and women’s basketball and baseball
games.
Prior to his stay at UNO and a brief stint with Golden Gloves
Boxing, Gallup headed the athletics departments at University of
Texas-Pan American, Lamar and Southern Utah. An
experienced and polished broadcaster, Gallup called Green Bay
Packer games during his days as a television sports anchor in
Green Bay, Wisc. and also has broadcast college athletics
Wisconsin, Wyoming and SMU. Gallup has had the privilege of
calling such events as the 1985 Bluebonnet Bowl, the 1984
Aloha Bowl and the 1984 NCAA Men’s Basketball
Tournament on CBS Radio.
A 1986 Graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas, the 53-
year old Gallup is married to the former Sharon Owens, who
like him is a native of Roswell, N.M. The couple currently
resides in the New Orleans suburb of Slidell and has four
children.
