The Nicholls Colonels baseball squad completed its two-game sweep over in-state rival Southern Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 victory at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels evened their record to 3-3, while the Jaguars fell to 1-4 on the season.
Senior outfielder Michael Roberts led Nicholls at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a homerun. Chris Barnes finished 1-for-2. Southern was led by Stephan Davis, who went 2-for-4 with a homerun.
Junior Michael Bartek (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Colonels, allowing only a hit, a walk and one unearned run in three innings of play. Junior pitcher Rudy Darrow, who had a save against the Jaguars on Friday night, picked up his second save of the season. Jeremiah Shepard took the loss for Southern, giving up one hit and two runs in two innings.
The Jaguars got on the scoreboard first in the second inning on a homerun by Davis.
Nicholls returns to action next weekend when the Colonels travel to Wichita, Kan., Feb. 24-26, to take on Wichita State in a three-game series.Softball
The Colonels softball team celebrated a home opener at its newly-renovated field with a win Monday against North Texas.
Nicholls dropped a 5-3 decision in game one but rebounded for a 6-4 victory in its final contest.
Sophomore pitcher Ally May received the loss (0-1) after working 6.1 innings in which she allowed five runs on six hits, while fanning two.
Sophomore Krystalin Ensminger took the win (2-1), as she worked a complete game and gave up four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
The Colonels will return to action this weekend when they host the Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament. Participating in the tournament are Jacksonville State and Louisiana Tech.
