Nicholls kicked off another year of Homecoming activities on Tuesday and will end the week with the announcement of Homecoming king and queen at the Nicholls vs. Southwest Texas football game. “I hope that Nicholls students will participate in many of the activities. It is a fun week, and I encourage all alumni to come out and support the Colonels and the NSU homecoming,” Deborah Raziano, director of alumni affairs and chair of the Homecoming activities committee, said.
Homecoming activities officially began with the Homecoming pep rally held in front of the Student Union Tuesday. The Homecoming court was presented at the pep rally. The 2001 Homecoming court is Jason Gaudet-mass communication senior from Napolionville, Duiel Hayes-accounting junior from New Orleans, Calvin Lafiton-mass communication senior from New Orleans, Corey Legendre-business junior from Thibodaux, Nehemiah Lucas-health and physical education senior from McComb, Miss., Alice Maxwell-government junior from Alexandria, Joseph Riley-elementary education senior from Liberty, MS, Jamie Boudreaux-health and physical education junior from Matthews, Andie Chiasson-operations management senior from Raceland, Latrandra Hills-nursing senior from Boutte, Christal Lewis-mass communication senior from Marrero, Toni Scrubbs-general studies senior from Marrero, Deanna Wahington-nursing junior from New Orleans, and Kenya Washington-elementary education senior from New Orleans.
The Homecoming parade will be tonight at 5:30 p.m., starting at John L. Guidry Stadium, Audubon to Menard; Menard to Canal; Canal to Seventh; Seventh to Bayou Lane; Bayou Lane to Menard; Menard to Audubon; Audubon to Nicholls campus. After the parade the Resident Housing Association will sponsor a bonfire between Babington Hall and the University Apartment Buildings, which will include a DJ, hot dogs and drinks sponsored by the Student Programming Association and a pep rally.
On Friday there will be a pre-tailgating party on the east side of Guidry Stadium sponsored by the SPA.
The week’s festivities will culminate on Saturday, beginning with a golf tournament at the Bayou Country Club that will start at 7:30 a.m. The price to enter the golf tournament is $75 per golfer and awards will be given for first, second, and third place teams.
A $15 entry fee for playing in the Homecoming tennis tournament that will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The day continues with the Women’s Intrasquad Basketball Game at 9 a.m. in the Stopher Gym. The game will be followed by the Men’s Intrasquad Basketball game at 11 am.
The Homecoming Buffet and pep rally celebration in the Quadrangle will begin at 4:30 p.m. The presentations of awards for the golf and tennis tournament will be at 5 p.m.
Immediately after the presentations of the awards, the cheerleaders and the Pride of NSU band will hold a pep rally.
The introduction of the homecoming court will take place at 5:30 p.m. While this introduction is taking place there will be a student tailgating party sponsored by the SPA on the east side of the Guidry Stadium.
The football game against the Southwest Texas Bobcats will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Homecoming king and queen will be announced and there will be a fireworks display sponsored by the SPA and Student Government Association during half-time.
“The queen will receive a crown and the king will receive a scepter that was donated by the SGA. There will also be gifts given to the queen that were donated by the Athletic Department and the Alumni Federation,” Raziano said.
Over the years many of the organizations participated in the Homecoming activities. The organizations that are included in this years homecoming are SPA, SGA, RHA, the Athletic Department and the Alumni Federation.
All of these organizations sponsored different homecoming activities to allow not only the students the opportunity to socialize, but also the faculty, staff and the alumni.
