The Nicholls State University’s soccer team fell to 0-6 in conference play after back-to-back losses against Sam Houston State University and Stephen F. Austin on the road last weekend.
The team has an overall record of 6-9-1, but with no wins in conference, they have only a small chance of advancing to the Southland Conference Championship, even if they defeat their next opponent, University of Texas at San Antonio.
Dylan Harrison, head soccer coach, still has hope for improvements to the team as a whole.
“We want every game to be our best game,” Harrison said. “We still have an opportunity to improve our program. We cannot change what happened so far, so the only thing that we can do is accept it.”
Nicholls competed against a steady Sam Houston team last Friday, which resulted in a 0-1 loss. Sam Houston scored in the second half of the game. They took 20 shots and had two saves, whereas Nicholls took eight shots and had nine saves.
The Colonels then played Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, which also resulted in a loss of 0-6. It was a tough match up for Nicholls, as Stephen F. Austin is undefeated in conference play. Five shots were attempted by Nicholls compared to Stephen F. Austin’s 25. The Colonels also only had one save while Stephen F. Austin had six.
The team will play at home tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio. The Roadrunners have only two losses in conference, so it will be another tough match for Nicholls.
The Colonels still have hopes though to end the season with a win. According to Harrison, the players have worked hard all season, despite some losses. Ending the season with a win would be a good way for the Colonels to wrap up a challenging year.
“I am proud of my players for always giving all of their effort and never giving up,” Harrison said.
With only a handful of seniors, the Colonels will have many players returning for next season. With such a young team, the future looks bright to some, and several younger players have already gained valuable experience on the field.
