The Student Government Association Senate will participate in the Great American Cleanup on March 19 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.”The SGA sponsors a portion of the road, so that is essentially why we received information on this,” Lee Daigle, mass communication junior from Thibodaux and SGA public relations director, said.
Through this sponsorship, the state litter coordinator has asked SGA to participate in cleanup efforts in Louisiana that will take place until the end of May. The portion of road is on Highway 308 between Bubba’s II Po-Boys & Seafood and Tiger Drive.
Daigle said that the SGA discussed the cleanup project with Judy Daniels, dean of student life, and they decided to get other organizations on campus involved.
“It turned into something that we wanted to promote as a campus-wide effort,” Daigle said. “A lot of organizations on campus need service hours.” So far, the Nicholls chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Delta Sigma Phi have agreed to participate.
Daigle thought that with other campus organizations participating in the cleanup effort that they could do more than clean a portion of highway.
“We figured that our efforts would best be put in a place like downtown,” Daigle said.
Daigle has arranged with city officials to clean up in the downtown area. “I am on a committee for Thibodaux,” Daigle said. “They place a big emphasis on revitalizing that area.” Daigle said they are planning to clean up the downtown area throughout the semester.
Keep America Beautiful, Inc. sponsors the Great American Cleanup.
Last spring, Louisiana contributed 13,767 volunteers who donated 66,464 hours of cleaning highways and public places, collecting approximately 937,752 pounds of litter.
