Nicholls Greek Life participated in a Day of Care on March 19. “Day of Care is a service learning opportunity for fraternities and sororities to interact with a variety of service organizations and learn about themselves and other people,” Rina Clarke, Greek Life coordinator, said.
Nicholls Greek Life wanted to do this because fraternities and sororities are based on scholarship and service to the community, she said.
Theta Xi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu and Alpha Phi Alpha were the Greek Life chapters who participated in this event.
Sigma Sigma Sigma showed up to participate in the Day of Care event, but was turned away by Clarke, Lea Bonvillain, business administration junior from Thibodaux and Sigma Sigma Sigma president, said.
“According to Rina, we didn’t have a sign up sheet, but she told us previously that we didn’t need one,” Bonvillain said. “She said she would just use our roster.”
When asked if anyone was told to leave, Clarke said no one was asked to leave.
Spartacus Brown, computer science sophomore from New Orleans, played cards with a senior citizen, and Gilbert Goodman, business management sophomore from New Orleans, talked to an elderly man at Maison Deville.
“It was a great experience. I went to a home in Houma and played cards,” Brown said. “It felt good. Mr. Calhoun told me he had wanted to play a game of blackjack for a while, but didn’t have anyone to play with him.”
“It was interesting,” Goodman said. “I just talked to a guy for a while. He had some intelligent things to say. You could tell he was happy.”
Students were able to choose from four locations to perform community service, which were Habitat for Humanity, Haven, Audubon Guest House and Maison Deville.
Nicholls Greek Life students were divided among the various locations. Each location had a mixture of students from fraternities and sororities so that the community could get an overall representation of the Nicholls Greek population.
