With three named tropical systems in the last two weeks, and another one forming in the Gulf of Mexico, it is crucial that students are aware of University’s Hurricane Preparedness Plans.
Below are answers to some of the most important questions students have about insuring safety in these situations.
Do you know what to do if a hurricane makes its way into the Gulf of Mexico?
The Nicholls State University Hurricane Emergency Plan, is available to all employees and community members and can be viewed on the University homepage. The plan outlines the levels of preparedness the University will undertake depending on the severity of the weather entering the Thibodaux area. In the event that a tropical storm enters the Gulf of Mexico, the University will immediately be placed on standby alert. At this time, students, faculty and staff can monitor the University site to determine the exact level of preparedness currently underway at the University.
What is the policy for on-campus residents in case of a hurricane?
According to the Emergency Plan, head residents will meet with the director and associate director of housing and residence life to enact preliminary measures. Residents will be directed to the University website for the latest emergency alerts and hurricane preparedness brochures will be handed out also. At this point, status and confirmation of possible transport vehicles will be addressed. Students will be informed of evacuation procedures and may be encouraged to leave. Students and staff will be notified of possible scenarios (i.e. students stay in rooms, students move to shelter on campus and/or students are moved to another campus.)
“Preparation is key,” Brian Clausen, director of environmental health and safety, said. “We advise students to clean out their fridges, take out their trash and pick up any loose items.”
What do teachers expect of their students when class is cancelled?
The Emergency Plan explains that teachers will accommodate the academic needs of students who must evacuate. They should inform students on how course information will be provided (i.e. Blackboard, Moodle, email). After a decision has been made to resume classes, faculty should post special instructions through electronic services like Moodle and Blackboard to inform students of the news.
What is the most reliable way for students to get alerts?
The best way for students to receive alerts, according to the Emergency Plan, is to check the University website, sign up for emergency text messaging on the University website or contact the alert line at 985-448-4636 or 1-866-709-8927.
“When we make an announcement, we want student to always be able to access the website and follow the steps there,” Clausen said. “Everything is in place at Nicholls in case of a hurricane, we just need everyone to be aware and informed.”
