With Jubilee heading into it’s second week, the celebrations and festivities at Nicholls and in the community are far from ending. Jubilee festivities are encouragement tools for students, families and community members to experience Nicholls life and the community around it. Most activities are free for students and geared for their enjoyment.
A Spirituality in Literature lecture kicks off Thursday’s events. Three professors from Nicholls and McNeese State University will be reciting their poetry, including David Middleton, Nicholls professor of English and poet in residence.
Accompanying the lecture later in the day will be a panel of reverends, ministers and rabbis addressing the theme of spirituality in literature as well.
The final performances of “Earl Long in Purgatory” is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Talbot Auditorium with actor “Spud” McConnel conducting a question and answer session following the evening performance.
Saturday, March 22 will feature an annual Louisiana Region X Science and Engineering Fair in Shaver Gym, as well as an Art Rally in Bollinger Memorial Student Union.
For those interested in the musical arts, a tribute to French Cabaret singer Edith Piaf, entitled “Soiee Edith Piaf” will be performed Sunday, March 23 in Nicholls’ Lindsley Band Hall. The tribute will be starring M.I. Scoggin, piano will be played by Matt Scoggin and accordion by Will Robichaux.
On Tuesday, March 25, Nicholls will become the center for the LMEA District Band Festival. The festival is open to the public and will feature numerous Louisiana high school bands.
Tuesday will also feature “In Celebration of the Purchase: Cartes historiques de Louisiane.” The presentation will feature a historic map exhibit and lectures by the New Orleans Historic Collection.
“I think for the history students and the community it’s going to be really interesting because they’re going to talk about Louisiana at the time of the Louisiana purchase,” Angella Hammerli said, Jubilee coordinator.
Tuesday also offers an opportunity for students and the community to listen to the Nicholls State Chamber Singers perform madrigals from several centuries. Rain or shine, the performance will take place at 1:30 p.m. in front of Talbot Auditorium.
Thanks to individuals associated with Jubilee, the American Hemerocalis Society will be hosting a lecture on Wednesday, March 26, to discuss daylily gardens and ways to cultivate them. The lecture will take place in Le BiJou Theater in Bollinger Memorial Student Union.
Wednesday also offers an opportunity for individuals to explore the arts outside of the Nicholls campus. A walking tour of Lockport’s historic district will take place at 4 p.m. followed by a reception at the Bayou Lafourche Folklife and Heritage Museum.
“I’m really excited about this because part of the goal of Jubilee is to reach out into the community,” Hammerli said.
Individuals interested in making Jubilee a family affair can take part in a children’s storytelling time scheduled for Thursday, March 27, at 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. at the Thibodaux Elementary School Library.
Coleen Salley, an author and professor emerita of children’s literature and storytelling at the University of New Orleans, will be conducting the stories.
During the 5:30 reading, children will have the opportunity to swap books in good condition with other children in attendance.
