The Lady Colonels ran into a tough Texas- Arlington team on Sunday, as they were defeated 6-2. The win capped off a series- sweep for Texas-Arlington.
Texas-Arlington dominated the first inning by scoring four runs to the Lady Colonels one. The fast start obviously gave Texas-Arlington a great deal of momentum to work with.
Lady Colonels head coach Phyllis Guedry said she was proud of the way her team maintained their confidence despite the circumstances.
“After giving up four runs early, we kept our spirits high and took some good cuts at the ball. We continued to play like we were still in the game. I was proud of the way that we handled it because most teams would have probably folded,” Guedry said.
Texas-Arlington capitalized on five Lady Colonel errors while they had none.
“We struggled a bit defensively,” Guedry said.
“We as a coaching staff are going to shuffle some players around until we find that consistent defense that we need. Our team is strong enough both mentally and physically to get it done, but it is just a matter of finding that special group.”
A single by Crystal Krebs and a bad outfield throw enabled Texas-Arlington to open a 4-0 lead.
“I thought today we really came out ready to hit the ball. We are very excited to come down here and get three wins. I think it says a lot about our focus and determination. At times, the calls from the umpires were questionable. It caused us to wonder whether to swing high or low because of the constant ‘strike-zone’ change. Nevertheless, we got the job done,” Debbie Nichols-Hedrick, Texas-Arlington head coach, said.
Texas-Arlington pitcher Katy Cox pitched a solid game to extend her record to 10-3.
She finished with six strikeouts.
“I thought our pitching was very acceptable. Katy did a great job of working the batters in certain situations. This was not the best game that we have played as a unit. But we are just trying to improve,” Coach Hedrick said.
The Texas-Arlington added their final two runs in the third and sixth innings.
The Lady Colonels got their first run in the first inning when right fielder Stephanie Sasser brought in shortstop Lindsey Yelverton on a sacrifice fly. Their last run came in the fifth when Yelverton’s double scored center fielder Jennifer Paray.
