The Colonels lacrosse team took care of business against Sam Houston last Saturday in a 15-6 victory. The win extended their conference record to (2-1).
“I think we played a pretty good game against Sam Houston. Honestly, we could have played much better than we did. We knew we were a better team than they were, and we pulled it out,” head coach Billy Tauzin, said.
Tauzin was pleased with the overall performance, but he said the play of Jacob Degate particularly stood out.
“Jacob was outstanding in this game. We usually call him “one-goal-wonder” because he scores just one goal a game, but he quickly put that title to rest by scoring an amazing four goals on Saturday. The guy was simply in a zone, ” Tauzin said.
Teammates Dustin Shooter added three goals, Alfredo Souler had two, Jason Smith came away with two and Aaron Wilson added one.
The Colonels have been rather fortunate as far as injuries are concerned. Outside of some bumps and bruises, they are strong overall.
“We are basically a healthy team right now.” Tauzin said. We have not had to deal with serious injuries. I would say our worst enemy is the weather. There have been guys who caught the flu, and have been under the weather a bit. The inability to practice because of the weather sometimes is a setback, but these guys are resilient enough to overcome those elements.”
The Colonels are looking to go on a solid winning streak as the season winds down.
“There is no doubt that we are aiming for the playoffs. These guys are hungry and they are definitely poised and ready to take that next step. The main thing I love about these guys is the fact that they are never satisfied. When we think about playoffs, we do not just want to be there for the heck of it, we want to win,” Tauzin said.
Tauzin said the quest to win games is made easier because of the relationship among the team.
“These guys get along so well. There are just so many positives that this team has. We have some fraternity guys, different races and creeds, and it is just a wonderful blend of people,” Tauzin said.
Tauzin realizes that lacrosse may not be the most popular sport on campus, but that does not take away from the excitement they have.
“Many people doubted this organization from the start,” Tauzin said, “but that only made me work harder to get this going and give these guys something fun and productive to do.”
Team member Jonathan Noble, who had three goals, says this team is definitely one to watch.
“We are looking to do some big things in these upcoming games. We know that we have still not yet put together a complete game. Once we do that, it will be a sight to see.”
Team member Tony Fontenot is battling a minor knee injury, but he says that will not bother him.
“I played in the first half and was injured in the second half. This sport is far too exciting to sit out of. I will play through any type of injury if possible. I love this game. Lacrosse is taking over baby.”
Texas-San Antonio 11 Colonels 5
The Colonels hung tough for a while, but were outlasted by Texas-San Antonio.
“We obviously did not have the outcome that we were looking for. I am proud of the way the guys stayed in the game,” head coach, Billy Tauzin, said.
Tauzin was not very happy some of the calls that went against his team.
“I felt we were victimized at times. There were just some very questionable calls out there. We were going against the refs, as well as Texas-San Antonio.
I guess it comes with the territory sometimes.”
The Colonels look to bounce back against Stephen F. Austin on March 22.
