Starting second baseman Ashley Bertot is a new addition to the Nicholls softball team.
The Texas native is a junior college transfer from the University of Buffalo, where she broke the program’s single-season stolen base record. Bertot lettered two seasons for the Bulls and was named to MAC All-Freshman team after hitting .306.
She said she has enjoyed her time at Nicholls thus far and with conference play starting next weekend, she has high hopes for the team this season.
Q: How long have you been playing softball?
A: I have been playing softball since I was three years old, so 17 years going on 18.
Q: Do you enjoy playing for Nicholls?
A: I do enjoy playing for Nicholls. It’s a smaller school, so I get to meet a lot of other athletes. The softball team has really good team chemistry. Another advantage is we get to play some other really good teams.
Q: What are your hopes for the rest of the season?
A: Conference starts next weekend, so my hopes are that everything starts falling into place, and we can pull out a really good season. I’m hoping that we are peaking at the right time.
Q: Other than softball, did you participate in any other sports in high school?
A: Yes, my freshman year I played varsity soccer in New Jersey.
Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
A: I get my hair braided and do my makeup the same. I try to stay away from rituals.
Q: What is your most memorable moment playing softball?
A: My most memorable moment playing softball was playing in the Babe Ruth World Series when I was 13.
Q: If not softball, what would you be doing?
A: I’d either be playing soccer or just being a regular student pursuing my accounting degree.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
A: In 10 years, I see myself being a successful accountant, married and raising a family.
Q: Do you have any role models?
A: My role model is Derek Jeter.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: I would describe myself as being happy, independent, friendly and intelligent.
