The Nicholls baseball team went 2-1 this weekend, pulling out a series win against the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
The team had a slow start on Friday, losing 6-1, but managed to come back strong, defeating the Warhawks 10-6 on Saturday and 6-4 on Sunday.
The series began with two errors by Nicholls in the first inning that led to two early runs for ULM. Senior pitcher Seth Webster allowed six runs on eight hits in the first six innings but finished tying the Colonel season-high of seven strikeouts.
The Warhawks held the Colonels to only four hits, with sophomore second baseman Phil Lyons having three of them. Lyons went 3-for-4 with one run scored, while designated hitter Jeremy Hill had the only other Nicholls hit that game.
ULM got an early lead in the first inning after junior pitcher Shelby Aulds stole second and then advanced to third on a bad throw by junior shortstop Leo Vargas. A walk to senior left fielder Caleb Clowers put runners at the corners then both in scoring position after a groundout. A wild pitch by Webster scored Aulds, which was followed by another Colonel error that brought the score 2-0.
The Warhawks scored two more runs in bottom of the sixth to put them up 4-0. ULM then came back with another two-run inning in the seventh which brought the score to 6-0.
The Colonels scored their only run of the game in the top of the ninth, when senior right fielder Michael LeGrange hit a sacrifice fly, which brought in Lyons.
The Colonels managed to hold off the Warhawks on Saturday, defeating them 10-6 after earning a 9-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Senior pitcher Patrick Shreve threw a career- and season-high of 10 strikeouts while giving up three runs on eight hits.
Lyons finished the night with a career-high four hits with three RBIs followed by Hill who hit the second home run of his career.
Lyons hit a single in the first inning and was then able to steal second after senior third baseman Blake Bergeron ripped a single through the right side to score Lyons, giving Colonels a 1-0 lead. Nicholls came back in the third inning, scoring another run after junior left fielder Michael Barba got on base with a walk and then stole second and took third on a passed ball. Lyons then grounded out to shortstop to bring in Barba putting Nicholls up 2-0.
The fourth inning began with LeGrange getting on base after a fielding error. He was able to advance two bases on a steal and wild pitch, eventually scoring on a walk to senior first baseman Beau Faulk. Faulk advanced to second after a ball got past the catcher and a steal by Vargas put runners in scoring position. Barba, junior outfielder Matt Richard and Lyons hit back-to-back-to-back singles to score three more runs with only one out.
Hill then brought in three runs after his shot to right field cleared the fence to give the Colonels a 9-0 lead. ULM scored one run in bottom of the inning to bring the score 9-1.
Lyons came back in the fifth with his third RBI of the day, bringing in Vargas which gave the Colonels a 10-1 lead. Nicholls then gave up five runs on five hits between the sixth and seventh innings, bringing the score 10-6. The Colonels were able to hold the Warhawks over the next two innings and got the 10-6 victory.
The Colonels managed to hold off the Warhawks again on Sunday to clinch the series victory with a 6-4 win.
Junior pitcher Michael Suk earned his second victory of the week while junior pitcher Jordan McCoy picked up his third save of the year. Suk came in for senior pitcher Mike Wisecarver who gave up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Over the final 2.2 innings, Suk, senior pitcher Brad Delatte and McCoy held ULM to only three hits.
Both Bergeron and LeGrange finished with two RBIs. LeGrange and Hill each had two hits, while Lyons extended his hitting streak to seven games going 1-for-3.
The game began for the Colonels with Lyons getting hit by a pitch. Lyons advanced to second after an unassisted groundout and then to third on a passed ball. Bergeron walked to put runners at the corners, and LeGrange hit a single to bring in Lyons and advance Bergeron to third base. A ULM error then allowed Bergeron to score, putting the Colonels up by two. An RBI hit by Vargas brought in LeGrange giving the Colonels a 3-0 lead.
Hill led off the sixth inning with a single but was out on the next play on a fielder’s choice by Bergeron. Bergeron took second after a passed ball and was able to score after LeGrange hit a single to left field, putting the Colonels up by four.
ULM came back in the seventh and tied the game with four runs on five hits.
The Colonels fired back with singles by both Lyons and Hill with only one out in the inning. Bergeron then hit a double to right center bringing in Lyons and Hill to take a 6-4 lead. Nicholls was able to hold the Warhawks the next two innings to take the series victory with a 6-4 win.
