If you’re a nerd, like many of us are, you have definitely been subjected to the hype associated with Peter Jackson (director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) producing the new theatre release “District 9.” Jackson is known for his directing prowess as well as his cinematic vision. Although the film was directed by Neill Blomkamp, a novice in the directing world, the general public’s focus has been on Jackson and his decision to endorse the film by stamping his name on it.Being an avid fan of the Lord of the Ring’s trilogy, I went into the movie expecting to be disappointed. Foolishly, I thought it would be hard for any movie with Jackson’s name stamped on it to live up to what I already knew to be an excellent set of films. After the first twenty minutes of “District 9,” I realized I was very wrong to associate this film with Jackson’s name and not with the director who was vital in the creation of the movie.
Blomkamp’s visions and direction were not characteristic of a director with little experience. The film was action-packed and possessed a very deep plot that kept the viewer engrossed and eagerly anticipating the next sequence. One of my favorite characteristics of the movie was a series of brief interviews with the main character’s family and acquaintances that gave the viewer a deeper insight into his personality. This created a bond with the main character that most movies either forget or do not bother to establish.
The film focused on a premise that, quite possibly, has never been done before. A group of approximately 1.8 million aliens become stranded in their spaceship orbiting in Earth’s atmosphere. It eventually comes to a halt directly over the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Humans, being curious in nature, inspect the ship after months of deliberation only to find the aliens malnourished and facing certain starvation. The humans are sympathetic at first giving the aliens food and shelter. Over time, the aliens, which humans aptly name “Prawns,” are contained in an area now named “District 9.” The district quickly becomes a caged, heavily-policed slum where the Prawns live uncomfortably and against their wills. During an “eviction” process concocted by the local government, the main character becomes part of a life-altering chain of events that leads to the climax of the film.
The movie was thrilling, entertaining and drama-filled throughout. With that being said, this movie is directed at sci-fi junkies. Its in-depth science fiction aspect might cause some mainstream movie-goers to be leery about seeing the movie. Do not be fooled, however, “District 9” has something to offer every type of movie-goer (except children). Whether your “cup of tea” in a movie is drama, action, excitement or thrills, “District 9” will keep you satisfied.
“District 9” definitely surpassed my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone who gets giddy over aliens and explosions. It’s a must-see that is easily one of the best movies I have seen in 2009.
