Junior college transfer Albert “A.J.” Williams is a Colonels football player trying to repeat his junior college career at Nicholls. Williams came to Nicholls in 2008 from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He helped lead the team to a share of the junior college national championship with 834 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Williams lead the tailbacks on his team with 250 yards receiving.
In addition to his football talent, Williams was a standout prep athlete and a state champion in the 100m and 200m track events.
Shortly after Tuesday’s practice in Guidry Stadium, Williams took the time to have a few words with The Nicholls Worth.
Q: What are your main positions?
A: “I play running back and kick return.”
Q: Is it hard for you to switch back and forth between the two?
A: “No, it’s just part of the game. You have to be in shape to do both because the other team kicks the ball off, and then I have to go right into offense.”
Q: What do you think makes you a good runner?
A: “My speed, my vision, my agility and being physical. I’m little, but I can still run somebody over!”
Q: How important is it for you to be able to run as well as catch the ball?
A: “When a player can catch as well as run, I can get down the field to help free up receiver Antonio Robinson. They will key on me, and that should open up Antonio a little bit.”
Q: What’s your favorite thing about football?
A: “Putting a move on somebody, running full speed and shaking someone.”
Q: Is there anything that gets you going before games?
A: “Usually I just sit there, and it hits me. It’s like I turn a switch off or on, and it comes to me. I guess it’s a football thing.”
Q: If you were a player on Madden football, which move would best explain the way you run?
A: “It would have to be a juke move. Yeah, some type of funky juke move!’
Q: What is the most rewarding thing you get out of football?
A: “I just love playing the game. If there is any way I can help the team, whether I go block, get the ball on kick returns or get the ball on offense, I do my part to help.”
Q: Will this be your last year playing at Nicholls?
A: “Most likely, it probably will be.”
Q: What will be the thing you miss the most?
A: “Being around my teammates, the fans and the love for the game. I’ve been playing since pee wee football.
