A free screening of the cult classic movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will be in the Student Union Thursday at 9 p.m. The event, presented by the Gay-Straight Alliance, will feature food and drinks, free gifts and a costume contest, with trophies awarded to each winner. GSA held a showing of the film before in 2006. When GSA president, Jordy Gaspard, psychology sophomore from Cutoff, heard of the event, he decided to bring it back. Gaspard said about 150 students are expected to attend.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” released in 1975, is a British musical comedy that parodies science fiction movies and horror films. The movie features Tim Curry in the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a hedonistic transvestite scientist, as well as Susan Sarandon and Barry Boswick.
Students are welcome to dress in costume, and audience participation is encouraged, Gaspard said. The list of participation props are as follows:
Rice. At the beginning of the film is the wedding of Betty Munroe and Ralph Hapchatt. As the couple exits the church, the guests throw rice. When this happens, the audience should throw rice also.
Newspapers and water pistols. When Brad and Janet are caught in a rainstorm, Janet covers her head. At this point, the audience should cover their heads and use the water guns to simulate the rain.
Candles and flashlights. These are to be used during the “There’s a light” verse of the song “Over at the Frankenstein Place.”
Rubber gloves. During the creation speech, Frank snaps his gloves three times. The crowd should snap theirs in sync.
Noisemakers. These should be used at the end of the creation speech when the Transylvanians applaud.
Confetti. This will be thrown in unison with the Transylvanians at the end of the “Charles Atlas Song.”
Toilet paper. This should be thrown when Dr. Scott enters the lab and Brad yells, “Great Scott.”
Toast. This should be thrown when Frank proposes a toast.
Party hat. The audience should put on their hats when Frank puts his on at the dinner table.
Bells. Bells should be rung during the “Planet Schmanet Janet” song when Frank asks, “Did you hear a bell ring?”
Cards. During the song “I’m Going Home,” Frank sings, “Cards for sorrow, cards for pain.” This is when the crowd should shower the room with cards.
The GSA will provide the props.
In addition to these audience interactions, participants are also encouraged to join in the “Time Warp” dance, Gaspard said.
Many students, including Sarah Thibodaux, mass communication junior from Raceland, are awaiting the upcoming event.
“I think it’s a terrific idea because the movie is great, and it is fun to watch with a big group,” Thibodeaux said.
Thibodeaux said she will attend dressed as the maid and is looking forward to doing the “Time Warp.
