As I sit here staring at this computer screen, I can’t think of anything to write about this week for sports. My editor wants me to write a personal opinion. I asked her if I could write about the United States economy, but to no avail; she said it has to be about sports. I don’t really care to write about the New Orleans Hornets and how they beat the Phoenix Suns 132-130 in double overtime. And for this season the Hornets are 4-0 versus Phoenix. No, I don’t think so. Not today, no boring stats and numbers to read for sports.
Oh, by the way, has anybody noticed the unemployment rate for January is at 4.9 percent down? Oh, but back to sports.
I just remembered I decided to take up tennis a few days ago. I usually love to play golf, but since the driving range was closed down where I once worked, I have not swung the club since October. Not to mention, it rains more here in T-town than in Seattle.
Back to tennis, Monday night on the tennis courts, I spoke with one of the tennis players about some fundamentals, so he showed me how to grip the racket and how to serve properly.
Which then brought us to discussing the Nicholls men’s and women’s tennis teams. The combined wins and losses sit at 8-2. The men sit at 5-2, and the women sit at 3-0. The ladies played a match Feb. 10 against Louisiana-Monroe and defeated them 4-3. Up next, the men have a match set for Feb. 16 versus the Memphis Tigers in Tennessee, and the ladies are set to play Texas-Pan American in Thibodaux Feb. 22.
According to the Associated Press-Ipsos Poll, 61 percent of the public believes the United States economy is now going through a recession. But the definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of decline in gross domestic product (GDP). I would like to thank the economic professors at Nicholls for my newfound knowledge. If I did not know this, I would probably be in the 61 percent.
In the United States, real gross domestic product – the output of goods and services produced – increased 0.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 4.9 percent. So, what gives? Is the economy really in that bad of shape? Why am I talking about this? I better get back to sports; my editor is going to…
Since I have been so busy with classes and studying for finance tests, I have not been keeping up with the ladies golf team. Well, I researched the Nicholls sports Web site, and this is what I found.
The ladies golf team played at the Mcneese State Invitational Feb. 8 and finished 11th place overall. Junior Theunette Van der Walt finished 17th place after firing a 79-82-73 at the par 72, 6,203 yard Koasati Pines Golf Course. The ladies golf team has been playing some good golf. Danielle Dunlop was the first lady golfer to win a first place finish at the Troy Invitational last year. Overall, the Lady Colonels finished second place.
The men’s basketball team is scheduled to host Texas A&M Corpus Christi tonight at 6:30 p.m. So, if you are a sports fanatic, bring your sweetie and have a great Valentine’s Day!
