A special meeting was conducted by Dr. Eugene Dial, vice-president for student affairs, concerning Tuesday’s events. This meeting would inform students how to get access to information about Tuesday’s occurrences and about counseling and support groups available to students as well.
Dial said there is no danger to colleges or universities throughout the country.
“We have been in contact with our state board office and the other universities. There is no reason to think that colleges and universities in Louisiana are not safe,” Dial said.
Dial gave students information from the University’s perspective at the meeting. He said although classes are going to continue as scheduled, the University realized that certain students may be impacted by the incident in different ways.
“The University does have in place a support system in the area of counseling and support groups,” Dial said.
“Something like this affects students on different levels, and whatever their reaction is to this, we want everyone to know that it is normal,” Dr. Michele Caruso, the director of the university counseling center said. “If the students need any type of assistance or support they can call the university counseling center.”
The counseling center is located in room 227 in Elkins Hall and the phone number is 448-4080.
According to Dial, the University will try to get information, at the requests of students of any family members who lived in the area from the American Red Cross.
Dial said students in the military or the National Guard should contact the communications officer in their unit for more information about their military status.
Dial ended the meeting by asking for a moment of silence.
Any students or faculty wishing to call to check on family members in the New York area, can call the American Red Cross at 1-800-229-8191.
