Much of New Orleans’ measures to work against future levee-breakage being taken under consideration in the Senate and House of Representatives have been spearheaded by Sandy Rosenthal, creator of Levees.Org. Levees.Org, a non-profit, non-sectarian and non-partisan Internet community, works to sponsor and push a more effective flood control system and better protection against floods, and it pushes for greater effort for protection of New Orleans and the rest of the United States.
Rosenthal and her 19,000 Levees.Org members push for the blame to be placed on the right people, too, namely the Corps of Engineers for the poor construction and upkeep on the levees of New Orleans.
As of now, Levee.Org wants the Corps to be held responsible for the levee failures as a result of Katrina.
Putting those responsible into the light of justice is not their only objective, helping Louisiana and the rest of the United States any way they can.
In 2006, Levees.org was the instrument that passed the Water Resource Development Act and federal legislation presenting a fairer share of revenues to Louisiana from royalties on offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
The organization is advocating the creation of an independent inspection group to investigate anti-flood measures of New Orleans, so the Army Corps of Engineers could not create a biased opinion in favor of the Corps.
In February, the Jefferson Parish Council backed Rosenthal on her campaign for a safer levee system by passing Resolution No. 109488, which supports the 8/29 Investigation Act.
