It recently has been pointed out to me that I am, in fact, “an idiot without so much as a basic understanding of biology,” according to a comment posted on the Nicholls Worth Web site. The comment was made in reaction to a story covering the recent speech forum held at Nicholls. It seems being open-minded and showing interest in the beliefs of others is a trait that at least one person feels is so unneeded and unwanted that it is worthy of ridicule. I know religion and evolution have become a huge debate, turning rational people into, well, “apes” seems appropriate.
What I find strange about this whole debate is very few people are able to take God out of the equation. Yes, I am aware that creationism is the belief that God created everything, and you are probably trying to figure how God can be taken out of this equation. Really, you don’t have to learn or understand why someone believes something, but you should strive to learn about the belief itself. Many wars have been fought over some simple little issue of tolerance because one side refused to accept some tiny difference in opinion.
Evolution, as I understand it, is a means of adapting to one’s surroundings. So now that I no longer have a tail and I walk upright and have these awe-inspiring opposable thumbs, what is left for me as far as evolution goes? Well, I guess since I’m an idiot, perhaps I should focus on evolving my mind, at least until I can figure out how to get rid of this useless tailbone.
It’s an interesting thought: evolve my mind, learn about things and people that surround me. If schools were not so busy teaching “facts” like Columbus and America, the “nine” planets in our solar system and that wonderful Thanksgiving shared by the Pilgrims and Indians, I could evolve.
Oh well, I hope one day all us idiots will have our brains evolve to the point that we no longer need to know anything about the differences in cultures. And then maybe evolve even further-to where the guns we use to fight wars in hopes of killing people with different opinions will be the opposable-thumb versions 2.0. But hey, what do I know?
