During the month of February, Nicholls, celebrated Black History Month. The peer group Student Educators And LeaderS took an active roll in this month’s events on campus. The group compiled important historical breakthroughs made by black Americans in our nations history and displayed this compilation on a board in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union.
The display outlined historical achievements and events for each of the 28 days of the month.
SEALS also held a Black History Month health fair Feb. 20
“The goal of the fair was to educate black students on the higher risk of falling victim to certain diseases among certain ethnic groups,” Jonathon Kerry, SEALS president, said.
Seals also participated in a luncheon with the Diversity Association for faculty, student leaders, administration and guest speakers for the upcoming Unity Gala.
SEALS, Student Government Association and Student Programming Association will be hosting their 2008 Unity Gala Feb. 28.
The event will be held in the Cotillion Ballroom and will begin at 6 p.m.
Guest speakers for the event will be Ida Bush, first ever black Nicholls faculty member; Eva Jacobs, first black College of Education faculty member; Eula Brinkley, first College of Nursing and Allied Health faculty member.
“The purpose of this event is to show how we all are one race not divided by color but united by spirit and that race is humanity,” Kerry said. The gala is open to all students, faculty and members of the local community.
“The greatest benefit that could be given to mankind would be for every individual to step up their maturity and be judged by personal character and content not by physical attributes and stereotypes,” Kerry said.
