Women’s basketball junior guard Ricshanda Bickham is trying to bring her success from the junior college level to the Colonels as she continues to score in large helpings. Bickham is majoring in mass communication at Nicholls after transferring from Conners State College in Oklahoma. At Conners State, Bickham led her team to the playoffs both seasons and averaged 12.0 points, 7.0 steals and 6.0 assists per game her sophomore season.
Bickham shared similar success in high school as she set the all-time leading scoring mark for Pine High during her senior season. Bickham was named LHSAA Player of the Year and participated in the All-Star Game.
Bickham made time before her game with Texas A&M Corpus Christi to talk about herself and her basketball career.
Q: What made you want to start playing basketball?
A: “Actually, I wanted to be a cheerleader, but this guy came and told me how fast I was and told me I should play sports. I got into sports after that.”
Q: What do you think makes you a good basketball player?
A: “My speed and my determination help me. I don’t like to lose, and I have a lot of heart.”
Q: Do you have any pregame rituals?
A: “I listen to a lot of music before games, and I get a lot of inspirational speeches from my past coaches.”
Q: What helps you stay focused during the game?
A: “I have to because I know I have to be a leader at all times, and if I’m not focused then my team’s not going to be.”
Q: Who is your favorite basketball player?
A: “My favorite basketball player is Lebron James.”
Q: If you could meet any famous personality, who would it be and why?
A: “I would like to meet Michael Jordan, and I would want to know how he was so successful playing basketball.”
Q: What do you plan on doing after you graduate?
A: “I plan on going back and coaching high school basketball.”
Q: What do you do in your time off?
A: “I love to go shopping.”
Q: What has been your most memorable moment or your biggest achievement in basketball?
A: “I never was a scorer, and now I’m a scorer, so I would say adjusting to my style of play at Nicholls.”
Q: What is the most rewarding thing you get out of basketball?
A: “I would have to say inspiring people.
