While most students spent the holidays at home, the women’s basketball team finished up their non-conference schedule and prepared for Southland Conference action. After a 56 to 46 win against Centenary College at home, the girls lost four straight games, including a heartbreaker to Southern Louisiana, 51-56, inside Stopher gym.
They finished up non-conference action with a 56-48 victory over Jackson State.
The Colonels are led by junior guard Ricshanda Bickham and freshman forward Alisha Allen. Both Allen and Bickham have led the Colonels in scoring throughout the season. Allen scored a team and season high 28 points in a loss at Bethune Cookman.
The team opened up Southland Conference play with back-to-back home games against the Lady Demons of Northwestern State and the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners.
The Colonels had three players who scored in double figures, but it was not enough, as the Lady Demons won 97-67.
“We played pretty well offensively, but Northwestern State was just lights out shooting the ball,” head coach DoBee Plaisance said.
In their second game in SLC action, the Colonels came up short against UTSA. Despite shooting a better percentage from the floor than the Roadrunners, the Colonels lost 58-49, dropping their record to 0-2 in Southland Conference play and 3-11 overall.
“We battled from start to finish,” Plaisance said. “We are getting better with every game, and we are showing improvement as a young team.”
The Colonels traveled to Nacogdoches, Texas Saturday to take on the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin. In their first conference road game, the Colonels lost 85-51. With their win over the Colonels, the Ladyjacks remain undefeated in SLC play.
The Colonels return to Stopher Gym Wednesday to take on the Cowgirls of McNeese State.
