The Nicholls Players are holding auditions for the spring semester play “The Diviners” today in Talbot theater.”The Diviners” tells the story of Buddy Layman, a young man who suffers a brain injury from nearly drowning. After the accident, he has a fear of water and the unique ability to divine its presence. Layman’s community tries to help him overcome his fear, but they fail. It isn’t until C.C. Showers, an ex-preacher, arrives and befriends Layman that the boy is freed from his fear of water.
Stanley Coleman, assistant professor of mass communication, said he wanted to put on “The Diviners” for some time. The play has won several awards while being performed at colleges, including the American College Theatre Festival Playwrighting Award.
Students interested in auditioning will be asked to read from a script so they can be judged on their voices, stage presence, freedom of movement and the type of role they fit into.
Auditions began yesterday and will continue today in Talbot theater from 4 to 6 p.m. The play calls for six men and five women roles, and everyone is welcome to audition whether they want to work on or offstage. The play is scheduled to be performed from March 18 to 21 in Talbot Theatre.
Auditions for the March speech forum are also being held in 102 Talbot hall on Feb. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The forum’s topic is “Resolved, that the state of Louisiana should legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes only.
