A double overtime thriller was not enough as the Colonels fell to the Demons by one, 99-98 inside Prather Coliseum on Saturday. The Colonels have not scored a high of 98 points since 2007. Junior forward Anatoly Bose had a career high 46 points and 14 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the season.
Along with Bose, sophomore point guard Chris Iles had a career high 24 points. Despite the two outstanding performances, it was not enough as Nicholls lost its second straight Southland Conference game.
Nicholls led 71-69 with less than a minuet left in the game, but a turnover by the Colonels gave the ball back to the Demons who scored, tying the game at the end of regulation.
The Colonels jumped out to a lead in the first overtime, but a 15-9 run by the Demons kept them in the game. Northwestern’s Devon Baker hit a layup as time expired to tie things up at 89 all to force the game to a second overtime.
The Demons and Colonels continued to fight back and forth in the second overtime.
The game was tied at 98-98 with under 20 seconds left when Colonel forward Dominic Friend was called for a blocking foul. The foul sent Baker to the line with just over a second left where he hit the first of two free throws.
A desperation heave by Bose fell short and the Demon’s escaped with a 99-98 victory.
The Colonels will return home to Stopher Gym where they are 5-0 this season to take on the Cowboys of McNeese State.
